LUSA news agency

LUSA began operations on 1 January 1987. Thenceforth, LUSA has been the only nationwide news agency and continues to retain this status.

LUSA was incorporated by means of a public deed drawn up in the 1st Notary Office of Lisbon on 19 December 1997, registered at the Lisbon Companies Registry Office - 2nd Section, on 2 February 1998, wherein the respective minutes were published in the Diário de República III Series, no. 51, of 2 March 1998.

LUSA – together with Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (RTP) and Radiodifusão Portuguesa (RDP)  (Public Service Broadcasting) – was incorporated within the 100% state-owned public limited company (sociedade anónima) “Portugal Global, SGPS, S. A.”, created by Decree-Law no. 82/2000, of 11 May, amended by Decree-Law no. 2/2002, of 4 January. Portugal Global was extinguished by Law no. 33/2003, of 22 August, which approved the restructuring of the state’s business sector in the audiovisual area. This law transferred to the State, the holdings in LUSA’s share, which as a result were held by the Directorate General of the Treasury (article 12 of the said Law).

The Contract for the Provision of the Information and News Service of Public Interest (available in Portuguese) was signed between the State and LUSA, on 31 July 2007, sets out the assumptions and defines the obligations inherent to the provision of this public service, by the News Agency (Clauses 2 and 4, respectively).
